The floppy disk drive was once a revolutionary storage device that transformed how people stored and transferred digital data. Introduced in the late 20th century, it allowed users to save files externally and move information between computers with ease. Although now considered outdated, the floppy disk drive played a vital role in the growth of personal computing and software distribution.

How a Floppy Disk Drive Works

A Floppy Disk Drive reads and writes data on a thin, flexible magnetic disk enclosed in a square protective casing. When inserted into the drive, the disk spins while a magnetic read/write head accesses the data stored on its surface. Early versions stored only a small amount of information by today’s standards, yet they were powerful tools at a time when internal storage was limited and expensive.
